Introduction

This page is about the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) administered by the National Examination Council (NECO). As with the West African Examination Council (WAEC), NECO conducts SSCE Exams for both secondary school based students at he end of their secondary school education as well as private candidates in Nigerian alone. In Nigeria either the WAEC SSCE certification or the NECO SSCE certification is required along with the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) certification to gain admission into a tertiary institution .

The Exam is held twice a year: June/July and November/December. The National Examination Council Examination (NECO) Certification will be awarded to any candidate who enters and sits for all the core subjects and two or three elective subjects.

The Council conducts four categories of examination:
  1. SENIOR SCHOOL CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION (SSCE)
  2. JUNIOR SCHOOL CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION (JSCE)
  3. NATIONAL COMMON ENTRANCE EXAMINATION (NCEE)
  4. GIFTED EXAMINATION TO FEDERAL ACADEMY SULEJA

Which Exam to take and why
In Nigeria NECO conducts four(4) categories of examination. The purpose of this page is to give information concerning only but one examination; the Senior School Certification Examination (SSCE). Please visit the NECO website to find out more about the other Exams administered by NECO.

The NECO SSCE  is taken by candidates in their last stage of Secondary Education. The SSCE is in two categories. One is for candidates in the third and final year of their secondary education and it is called SSCE Internal. The Second is SSCE External and is for candidates not in the School system.

NECO SSCE certificate is a requirement for gaining admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria, may be used in securing jobs or applying to elective positions. This Examination is only conducted in Nigeria.

NOTE: NECO SSCE is held twice every year. The first called NECO SSCE (Internal) is taken in June/July and is for candidates preparing the leave the secondary school. Being a student of a Ministry of Education recognized school is a prerequisite to taking the exam.

The Second Exam called the NECO SSCE (External) comes up in NOV/DEC and is opened to the public, any candidate can apply.

Preparing for NECO SSCE Exams

Registration Information
For Scondary school Candidates (June/July):
Heads of Schools or their representatives are expected to register candidates for the Examination

For Private Candidates (NOV/DEC):
Private Candidates are expected to register themselves for the examination. Follow the steps below to register online:
  1. Purchase the NECO (external) registration card form NECO authorized dealers as will be made public by NECO.
  2. Start your e-Registration by visiting SENIOR SCHOOL CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION (SSCE External)
  3. On the Examination Registration box on the Right side of the Registration Page. You will be required to Enter the Type of Application, What Exam you are applying for, your Card PIN and card serial number.
  4. Click on the Register button and follow all on screen instruction that you may see.

Note: You will need to scan your finger for you to complete your online registration. NECO has provided a search-able list of internet cafe with a finger scanner. Click here to view the list.

Preparing for the Exam
NECO does not prepare candidates for its examination by establishing secondary schools or tutorial centers, and no such institution are affiliated to the Council.

However NECO uses the Nigerian Secondary school syllabus to set the questions for their examination. While for private candidates a syllabus brochure is provided when you make payment for the Exam.

There are some tutorial centers that also prepare candidates for the Exam.
Exam Time Table Information The NECO SSCE examination will be held twice a year: June/July and November/December. The actual dates for each will be communicated by a circular to School candidates or publications in the press for Private candidates.

NECO SSCE Subject Selection Candidates are required to enter and sit for a minimum of eight (8) and a maximum of nine (9) subjects.
These must include the following :
(i) English Language
(ii) Mathematics
(iii) At least one Nigerian Language.
(iv) At least one of Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
(v) At least one of Literature-in-English, History and Geography.
(vi) Agricultural Science or at least one vocational subject.
Exam Centers For Secondary School Candidates (JUNE/JULY):
Candidates' School will be used as NECO Examination Centers. NECO normally provides invigilators, who liaise with the school teachers to ensure the Examination is conducted properly.

For Private Candidates (NOV/DEC):
On successful completion and submission of your registration form, the system will allocate a center to you (it is your responsibility to locate your center) and generate your examination number. You should then print the admission notice/photo card. Note that this document will be required before you are allowed into the examination hall.

Institutions that accept NECO SSCE Certification The recognition of SSCE certificates to be awarded by NECO was the focus of a lot of debate among Nigerians at the inception of NECO. The Minister of Education categorically asserted that the certificates would be recognized for purposes of employment and, also, admission into tertiary institutions.

Result Checking Information
Check your result online: After you must have purchased the NECO result checking scratch card, visit the NECO result checker site (http://www.mynecoexams.com/results/default.aspx) and follow the on screen instructions.
Previous Exam Statistics
At least 870,305 candidates who sat the June/July 2010 Secondary School Certificate examination conducted by the National Examination Council failed to get credit passes in English Language.

NECO SSCE Results and certification
The National Examination Council Certification will be awarded to a candidate who enters and sits for all the core subjects and two or three elective subjects. Certificates will he awarded on the basis of subjects offered. The core subjects are as follow: 
  • English Language
  • Nigerian Language
  • Mathematics
  • One Science subject (Chemistry,Physics' Biology)
  • One of either Literature in English, Geography or History
  • Agricultural Science or Vocational Subject
